A Legacy of Feline Care in Auckland

Established in 1950 by David and Fay McCrum, the Ashwood Pet Hotel began as a haven for cats in Howick. Fay, a renowned Persian cat breeder, started boarding cats for her clients, and her exceptional care quickly earned a strong reputation. Recognising the growing demand, David constructed dedicated feline accommodations, laying the foundation for one of Auckland’s most respected cat boarding services.

Our Journey: From Ashwood Pet Hotel to Catz at Ashwood

In 2002, we—Carissa and Christian—took the reins and rebranded the facility as Catz at Ashwood – Quality Boarding Cattery. Our mission was to honour the legacy while introducing a new era of personalised feline care.

Carissa’s passion for animals ignited in childhood, surrounded by cats, goats, and other furry companions. Her experience working at a reputable Auckland cattery fueled her dream to run one herself. Christian shared a similar upbringing, growing up with rescued cats in a home where compassion for animals was paramount.

Expertise at Our Auckland Cat Boarding Cattery

With over 20 years at a local veterinary clinic, Carissa brings a wealth of experience to our cattery. Her skills in medication administration, including injectable medications like insulin, ensure that cats with special medical needs receive expert care.

We also offer grooming services to our feline guests during their stay, ensuring they return home looking their best. Additionally, we accommodate specialised diets provided by owners at no extra charge, maintaining consistency in your cat’s nutrition.

Our Facilities: A Blend of Comfort and Creativity

Transforming the space required dedication. We undertook major renovations, refreshed every room, and invested in high-quality facilities. In 2009, renowned muralist Doug Ford added a native forest scene to the cattery walls—complete with birds, fish, and hidden frogs—creating a calming environment. During the COVID lockdowns, Christian added vibrant murals, including a bold tiger on the garage door and colourful birds along the walkway, adding unique artistic touches.
