The History of Catz at Ashwood
A Legacy of Trusted Cat Boarding Since 1950
From Ashwood Pet Hotel to Catz at Ashwood
The History of Catz at Ashwood begins in 1950 when David and Fay McCrum founded the Ashwood Pet Hotel in Howick. Fay, a well-known Persian cat breeder, began boarding cats for her clients. Her exceptional care quickly earned a strong reputation, prompting David to build dedicated feline accommodations. What started as a favour to friends soon became one of Auckland’s most respected cat boarding services.
As demand grew, the McCrums’ commitment to quality set them apart. David later took over full-time cattery management while Fay shifted her focus to breeding poodles. After decades of caring for Auckland’s cats, the McCrums retired in 2002, passing the cattery on to new owners.
A New Chapter in the History of Catz at Ashwood
In 2002, Carissa and Christian took ownership of the cattery and gave it a fresh identity: Catz at Ashwood – Quality Boarding Cattery. Their goal was to honour the past while creating a new era of personalised feline care.
Carissa’s love for animals began as a child, surrounded by cats, goats, and other furry friends. A stint working at a well-regarded Auckland cattery sparked her dream to run one herself. Christian shared a similar upbringing, growing up with rescued cats in a home where compassion for animals was the norm.
Their shared passion and hands-on approach have shaped Catz at Ashwood into the premium cattery it is today. To see the space they’ve so lovingly created, we welcome you to explore our Facilities and get a feel for where your cat will be spending their time.
Revitalising a Trusted Auckland Cattery
Transforming the space took dedication. Carissa and Christian undertook major renovations, refreshed every room, and invested in high-quality facilities. Through word of mouth and glowing recommendations from local vets, they have built a loyal following.
Today, Catz at Ashwood stands proudly among Auckland’s most trusted and established catteries—continuing a history of exceptional service.
Artistic Touches that Set Us Apart
In 2009, renowned muralist Doug Ford added a native forest scene to the cattery walls—complete with birds, fish, and hidden frogs—bringing a natural, calming environment to life. His work can also be seen in Cornwall Park and ASB Stadium.
During the Covid lockdowns, Christian added vibrant murals of his own, including a bold tiger on the garage door and colourful birds along the walkway. These distinctive artistic touches are part of what makes Catz at Ashwood truly unique.
