A little about us
Begun in the early ’50s, Catz at Ashwood Quality Boarding Cattery is Auckland’s oldest boarding cattery.
It started life as Ashwood Pet Hotel, by husband and wife team David and Fay McCrum, the boarding cattery grew from Fay’s award-winning Persian breeding. Fay was often asked to look after her customers’ prized cats when they went on holiday, and as word spread of her holiday home for cats, soon she had a new business, in addition to raising their three children.
David built spacious accommodation for the visiting felines, the business took off. Many years later when David retired he took over the running of the cattery, and Fay was able to spend more time breeding poodles.
After many successful years and due to David’s failing health the couple thought it was time to move to the countryside.
This is when present owners Christian and Carissa Hahn took over.
Having grown up with a wide variety of animals from goats to mice, to cats, Carissa had for many years dreamed of working with animals, especially cats, when she saw an ad in the paper wanting someone to work in a well established and popular cattery in Pakuranga she jumped at the chance, and even though she now owns her own cattery, she still enjoys working there today.
Christian’s mother was the start of his love of cats, she was forever taking in strays, much to his father’s resistance. At one stage the family had seven cats, complete with siblings from a stray mother that had given birth under the house. Forward several years, and Christian was to be found “working” in the toy industry, and having met Carissa he found in someone who was a close match for his mother’s love of cats.
Once the opportunity came for the pair to own their own cattery, they couldn’t resist.
The cattery was in need of a little TLC, but with plenty of help cleaning from the family (and a new paint job), it was soon in top shape again. In 2009 skilled mural artist Doug Ford, came in and painted a native forest complete with birds and fish.
Now renamed to reflect the new ownership, Catz at Ashwood Quality Boarding Cattery is again one of Auckland’s top catteries. It has quickly built up a loyal following of regular customers, who in turn recommend us to their friends, and the local veterinaries not only recommend us to their customers, several even board their own cats with us.
